What you need to know about the college basketball transfer portal in 2025
The college basketball transfer portal is officially open.
Just as it was last spring, it’s expected to be a busy portal season for Indiana basketball.
The Hoosiers moved on from Mike Woodson at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season and hired Darian DeVries on Tuesday, March 18.
DeVries and his coaching staff must rely heavily on the transfer portal to build a 2025-26 roster.
The portal will also look different this spring than in previous years.
In October, the Division I council approved changes to the notification-of-transfer window. The change included reducing the window from 45 to 30 consecutive days in football and men’s and women’s basketball.
“With several years of data now available, we know that the vast majority of student-athletes are entering the portal within the first four weeks of it opening,” Josh Whitman, athletics director at Illinois and chair of the council, said in a release. “The NCAA remains committed to adjusting to the rapidly changing collegiate athletics landscape while continuing to keep student-athletes at the forefront of our decision-making process. These window adjustments met that standard.”
Last spring, the window to enter the transfer portal for men’s basketball began on Monday, March 18 and concluded on Wednesday, May 1. This year, the portal opens Monday, March 24 and closes Tuesday, April 22.
The deadline is only for entering the portal and doesn’t require student-athletes to choose a new school by April 22.
The NCAA does not provide public access to the transfer portal, but numerous resources are available to track names as they enter.
Verbal Commits is the most frequently updated resource, which features a constantly updated feed of portal entries. Verbal Commits also tracks portal entries on its X (formerly Twitter) account.
247Sports also has a transfer portal tracker that is updated in real time.
As of early Monday morning, two Indiana players, Gabe Cupps and Malik Reneau, had entered the transfer portal.
Last offseason, three Hoosiers – CJ Gunn, Kaleb Banks and Payton Sparks – left via the portal. Indiana brought in six players – Dallas James, Kanaan Carlyle, Langdon Hatton, Luke Good,e Oumar Ballo and Myles Rice – via the portal last spring.
There are currently over 400 players in the portal, according to Verbal Commits.
