How it happened
It was a sharp first half from Indiana on Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Hoosiers led by as many as 16 points, thanks to an efficient offensive performance. Indiana shot 17-for-33 from the field, including a 5-for-13 mark on 3s. Malik Reneau came off the bench and shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and had a game-high 14 points in 12 first-half minutes. Over half of Indiana’s points came from the bench (25). The Huskies, meanwhile, struggled with turnovers and didn’t shoot well in the opening half. Washington shot just 37.9 percent and committed seven turnovers. Great Osobor logged just 11 minutes and had two points. Indiana led 44-30 at the break.
It was a slow start for the Hoosiers out of the halftime break as Washington scored seven of the first nine points to make it 46-37 at the first media timeout. Indiana pushed the lead back to 14 on a bucket from Trey Galloway with 14:05 to play, but Wilhelm Breidenbach’s 3-pointer got the Huskies within 11 at the under-12 media timeout. Out of the timeout, Luke Goode scored six straight points – a free throw, a second chance putback and a 3-pointer – to push the Indiana lead to 57-40. The Hoosiers stretched the lead to 20 at 64-44 by the under-eight media timeout after two straight buckets by Reneau. After Indiana led by 21, Washington scored six straight and Mike Woodson took a timeout leading 67-52 with 5:13 to play. The Huskies would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way as Indiana won for the fourth time in five games.
Standout performers
Reneau led Indiana with 22 points in 25 minutes off the bench. He shot 10-for-13 from the field. Goode added 18 points, including a 5-for-9 mark on 3-pointers. Myles Rice and Mackenzie Mgbako added 10 points apiece.
Statistics that stand out
Indiana shot 9-for-23 on 3s, had 35 bench points and dominated Washington in the paint. The Hoosiers outscored the Huskies 40-34 in the paint.
