Quick thoughts on a 73-58 win against Purdue:

How it happened

Indiana played well for the first 11 minutes on Sunday afternoon at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers were successful in getting the ball into the paint and jumped to a 21-16 lead by the 9:07 mark. But once the Boilermakers tightened the screws defensively and started to make 3s, Indiana had no answer. Purdue closed the half by outscoring the Hoosiers 21-4 to claim a comfortable 37-25 advantage. It was the latest disappointing performance in Bloomington for the Hoosiers, who entered the game with four straight losses on their home floor. IU shot a dismal 1-for-11 on 3s in the first half as Purdue was red hot at 6-for-11 from distance.

Out of the break, it was all Indiana. The Hoosiers tied the game at 39 on a dunk by Malik Reneau with 15:27 to play. And as Purdue struggled to take care of the ball and run its halfcourt offense, Indiana was able to build a lead. The Hoosiers took the lead on a 3-point play by Luke Goode with 14:39 left. Purdue didn’t score a point from the 15:11 mark to the 9:54 mark as IU grew the advantage to 53-40. By the under-eight media timeout, the Hoosiers led 57-44 and had outscored the Boilermakers 32-10 in the second half. After Purdue got within 10 at 61-51 on a pair of free throws from Fletcher Loyer, IU got a free throw by Oumar Ballo and then a putback by Ballo with 4:02 left to push the lead to 64-51 at the final media timeout. After a 3-pointer by Myles Colvin with 3:32 left made it 64-54, Indiana went on a 9-1 run to push the lead to 73-55 and seal the victory.

Standout performers

It was a collective effort for the Hoosiers, who had five scorers in double figures. Reneau and Trey Galloway led the way with 15 points each. Reneau was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and Galloway had nine assists. Myles Rice added 12 points and played terrific defense in the second half. Ballo came off the bench and scored 12 points in 22 minutes. And Goode had 11 points, including two 3-pointers.

Statistics that stand out

Indiana dominated the game in the paint. The Hoosiers outscored Purdue 44-18 in the paint. The Hoosiers shot 68.6 percent on 2s. Points off of turnovers were also heavily in IU’s favor, 23-12.
