Quick thoughts on a 90-55 win against Eastern Illinois:

How it happened

It was a poor defensive start for Indiana Sunday afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Eastern Illinois came out firing and connecting from the perimeter. Nakyel Shelton scored 11 points by the under 12 media timeout and the Panthers were tied at 18 with Indiana. Out of that timeout, the Hoosiers stretched the lead to seven on a Trey Galloway layup in transition that capped off a 9-2 run. Eastern Illinois came back and tied it at 27 on a Shelton bucket with 7:15 left in the half. From there, the Panthers outplayed Indiana for the rest of the first half and led by as many as five before settling for a 37-36 edge at intermission.

Indiana had a 9-0 run early in the second half to go ahead 47-43, which forced Marty Simmons to use a timeout at the 16:31 mark. Simmons had to burn another timeout with 14:09 left as the Hoosiers stretched the lead to nine at 54-45 on a Malik Reneau dunk. The Hoosiers forced another EIU timeout at the 12:51 mark following an Oumar Ballo transition dunk that made it 58-45. Indiana’s run reached 32-5 on a Bryson Tucker dunk in transition, which grew the lead to 22 with 9:24 left. The Hoosiers were never challenged the rest of the way as they improved to 2-0 this season.
