Film Session: Vonleh’s versatility, halfcourt possessions
IV. Failure in the halfcourt
With Chicago State sitting in a 2-3 zone, Ferrell calls out a play:
The action starts here with what looks like a double ball screen up top. Hollowell has a body on a Chicago State defender:
So Yogi takes it that way and has again collapsed the defense into the middle of the court, freeing his teammates. Ferrell brings the ball into the middle and passes it out to Evan Gordon on the right wing. Gordon has a bit of space, but decides to dribble up top and loft a pass over the top to Austin Etherington:
Etherington quickly swings the ball to Hollowell in the corner, who also appears to have appropriate space to launch the shot:
But it’s swung back around the court to Ferrell:
With Mosquera-Perea sealing off for him, he makes a move baseline:
With the defense coming to meet him, Ferrell sees space. He leads Mosquera-Perea with a pass that shows a clear lane to the hoop:
But Mosquera-Perea fails to anticipate Ferrell’s decision, and leans for the ball after it’s too late. The ball is already by him. Turnover Hoosiers:
While Mosquera-Perea has clearly made strides to his game since last season, here’s an instance where his court awareness was lacking. (Though one could argue the pass may have been a little tough to handle as well.)
