Film Session: Indiana’s late-game execution
IV. VIC’S BREAKAWAY
On the ensuing inbounds, we see Oladipo streaking down the court with Keith Appling pointing for someone to pick him up:
Appling eventually chooses to try and follow himself with Hulls and Harris tangled a bit and Hulls trying to slow Appling:
This sequence eventually ended with Nix tipping the inbounds pass to Zeller, which Zeller let go out of bounds. But as Magic Johnson noted on the call, it set the table for Indiana’s next play out of the ensuing inbounds.
Video:
With the ball now being inbounded on the sideline, Hulls curls around Zeller and Nix as Harris pursues:
But Appling, who was marking Oladipo, follows. As Harris looks to pick up Oladipo on a switch, his eyes completely miss Oladipo as he begins to streak down the court:
Harris eventually notices, and reverses course as Oladipo keeps going:
Watford makes the pass with Oladipo having plenty of room on Harris. Unlike last time — where Ferrell’s man may have been lurking on Indiana’s side of the court to intercept a longer pass to Oladipo — this pass just makes more sense. While this is traditionally a harder spot to inbounds the ball, Watford doesn’t have anyone playing free safety behind Victor and he doesn’t have to go over the top of as many MSU players:
Again getting several steps down the court on Michigan State’s defense, Victor dunks and scores the bucket:
